In the late autumn of 2021, a tragedy unfolded in the small city of Princeton, Kentucky, forever altering the lives of those connected to 57-year-old Ursula Ilene Hamlet. On Monday, November 22, 2021, Hamlet, a female resident of Princeton, was found deceased inside a home on Coleman Crider Road. The initial call to the Caldwell County Sheriff's Office prompted an investigation that would soon uncover a violent end to her life.
Responding to the scene, law enforcement discovered Hamlet
had sustained a single gunshot wound to her neck. The Caldwell County Coroner pronounced her dead at the residence, and the nature of her injury immediately pointed towards a homicide. Kentucky State Police were called in to lead the investigation into the fatal shooting. As detectives began to piece together the events of that night, their focus quickly turned to one individual.
The investigation led to the arrest of 39-year-old Tommy Dunning, who was identified as Hamlet's boyfriend. According to state police, an altercation between the couple had occurred, culminating in the alleged fatal shooting of Hamlet by Dunning. In January of the following year, a Caldwell County grand jury indicted Dunning on a charge of murder in connection with Ursula Hamlet's death. He was subsequently lodged in the Caldwell County Jail on a $1 million cash bond, and the legal proceedings in his case began.
