In the early hours of May 1, 2021, a 37-year-old mother of two, Kasmira Nash, was fatally shot while working at the Vibes Restaurant and Ultra Lounge on River Road in Louisville, Kentucky. The nightclub was crowded for a Derby weekend kickoff party. Nash, who also worked at Humana, was a bartender at the establishment to provide for her family. The festive atmosphere of the event was shattered when an altercation escalated into gunfire, leaving Nash mortally wounded and another man injured.
Emergency services were called to the scene around 1:30 a.m., but Nash was pronounced dead at the nightclub.
The investigation into the shooting led police to identify 27-year-old Ronnie Tyshon O'Bannon, a DJ for rapper Jack Harlow who was present at the club, as the primary suspect. On May 11, 2021, O'Bannon was indicted on charges of murder and tampering with physical evidence in connection with Nash's death and subsequently turned himself in to the authorities. According to friends and family of Nash, the incident began when she recognized O'Bannon as the man she believed had shot and killed a friend of hers in August 2020. An argument ensued, which reportedly turned physical.
During legal proceedings, O'Bannon's defense attorney claimed that he acted in self-defense. The defense alleged that Nash had attacked O'Bannon with a champagne bottle, striking him in the head, before he fired his weapon. Prosecutors, however, argued that O'Bannon was a danger to the community and had fled the scene with the gun after the shooting. O'Bannon was also named a person of interest in a separate fatal shooting that occurred in August 2020, though no charges were filed against him in that case. In October 2023, O'Bannon accepted a plea deal, pleading guilty to the amended charges of reckless homicide and tampering with physical evidence. He was sentenced to two and a half years, and with credit for time already served under home incarceration, he avoided further prison time. In December 2021, Nash's family filed a lawsuit against the owner of the nightclub, alleging negligent security.
