In the heart of Louisville's Chickasaw neighborhood, a tragedy unfolded on the evening of August 13, 2025, forever altering the lives of a young family. Jermia Offutt, a 28-year-old Black woman and expectant mother of three, was fatally shot in the 4100 block of West Broadway. Four months pregnant with a son she planned to name Kaontay Jr., her death marked a devastating loss of two lives.
Her three young children were present and tragically witnessed the violent act that took their mother from them.
The incident occurred around 9 p.m. in the parking lot of Brothers Market at 41st and Broadway. According to the Louisville Metro Police Department, Offutt was an innocent bystander. She was with her boyfriend when two groups, described as juveniles or young adults, had a verbal altercation. The dispute escalated when one individual drew a firearm and fired at the opposing group, unintentionally striking Offutt. She was rushed to the University of Louisville Hospital, but succumbed to her injuries.
In the wake of the shooting, Jermia Offutt's family was plunged into profound grief. Her mother, Angie Davis, lamented the loss of both her daughter and her unborn grandson, expressing anguish for her now motherless grandchildren. Offutt's uncle tearfully remembered his niece as a loving person, emphasizing the immense void her death left in the lives of her family and friends. Known affectionately as 'Squeaky,' she was remembered for her kind and goofy nature.
As of the days following the shooting, no arrests have been made in connection with Jermia Offutt's death. The LMPD Homicide Unit is actively investigating the case, and authorities have pleaded with the community for any information that could lead to the identification and apprehension of the suspect or suspects. Police officials have stated that surveillance footage shows numerous witnesses were present at the scene. The shooting was one of two separate incidents in which mothers were killed in Louisville on the same day, prompting calls from community activists for an end to the city's gun violence.
