Do you know who murdered Gloria Barnes? On July 13, 1997, the body of 35-year-old Gloria Jean Barnes, a white female, was discovered by four truck drivers at the Seven Gables truck stop in Springfield, Missouri. Her body, wrapped in blue furniture blankets, was found lying in the open on the asphalt parking lot behind the truck stop. An autopsy revealed that she had been beaten about the head, fracturing her skull, and had sustained stab wounds to her chest and leg.
She was found wearing a white T-shirt with 'Spring Break' written on it and black shorts. The discovery was made just one day before her 36th birthday.
Investigators learned that Barnes was last seen alive in Joiner, Arkansas, around midnight on July 10, 1997. In the early hours of July 11, she made a distressing phone call to her brother from a payphone at a convenience store in Joiner, telling him that someone was trying to 'get her.' Her family noted that she had been experiencing paranoia and feared people were following her. Tragically, the convenience store where she made the call was burglarized that same night. There was also an unconfirmed sighting of a woman believed to be Barnes walking along Interstate 55, about a mile from Joiner, shortly after the phone call. Her body was found nearly 300 miles away from where she was last seen, in a city with which she had no known connections.
Despite the passage of time, the murder of Gloria Jean Barnes remains unsolved, and no arrests have ever been made in connection with her death. The Springfield Police Department has pursued various leads over the years. Investigators received anonymous tips shortly after the discovery of her body, and there was intercepted CB radio traffic from an unknown individual claiming responsibility for her death. One significant lead pointed towards a gray Peterbilt semi-truck that may have given Barnes a ride. This truck was described as having the word 'Graceland' and a picture of Elvis Presley on it, and possibly the name 'Memphis Consolidation' or 'Trailer Transit' on the doors. While police explored the theory that she may have been the victim of a truck driver, her brother has publicly stated his belief that the person responsible was someone close to the family. The case remains an active cold case, with law enforcement continuing to seek information from the public.
