Mario Alvarez, a 21-year-old Hispanic male, was fatally shot on August 29, 2022, in front of his residence in the 3800 block of Morales Street in San Antonio, Texas. The incident occurred when two individuals, Gilbert Torres and Stephanie Zaragosa, arrived at Alvarez’s home in a Jeep Cherokee. Zaragosa, 22, motioned for Alvarez to approach the vehicle, and as he did, Torres, 24, who was concealed in the back seat behind tinted windows, opened fire, shooting Alvarez multiple times.
He was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
Following the investigation, both suspects were charged with murder. Torres and Zaragosa were indicted for intentionally and knowingly causing the death of Alvarez using a firearm. The case was prosecuted in the 186th District Court. Murder is classified as a first-degree felony in Texas, carrying a potential sentence of five to 99 years or life in prison, along with a possible fine of up to $10,000.
In April 2024, Zaragosa pleaded guilty to the murder and was sentenced to 18 years in prison. Torres, who had violated the conditions of his plea agreement, was sentenced to 30 years in prison for his role in the killing. The sentencing reflected the severity of the crime and the calculated nature of the attack. Authorities confirmed that the suspects had planned the shooting, with Zaragosa luring Alvarez toward the vehicle before Torres carried out the fatal act.
