William Vernon Bates, a 32-year-old white male accountant from Lima, Ohio, was reported missing on September 3, 1974, after leaving his home to attend to work at the Ohio Power Company office. His disappearance remained a mystery until November 28, 1974, when a hunter discovered his badly decomposed body in a wooded area east of Lima. The Allen County coroner, Dr. William Noble, determined that Bates had been strangled.
