On July 14, 1991, a violent domestic incident occurred in a Detroit, Michigan home resulting in the death of Tonya Clayton Green. The young Black female, who was six months pregnant at the time, was attacked by her husband, Gregory Vicente Green, in a kitchen confrontation that escalated into a brutal stabbing. Reports indicate that Gregory used a steak knife to inflict approximately ten wounds upon his wife, striking her in the neck, back, chest, and cheek.
The severity of the assault proved fatal for both Tonya and her unborn child. Following the attack, Gregory Green did not attempt to flee the scene; instead, he contacted emergency services himself. When police arrived, he calmly waited for them, directed the officers to his wife's body in the kitchen, and indicated where he had placed the murder weapon inside the refrigerator.
The legal proceedings that followed Tonya’s death resulted in Gregory Green being taken into custody and charged with murder. In 1992, he entered a plea of no contest to second-degree murder charges in Wayne County. The judicial system sentenced him to a prison term of 15 to 25 years for the crime. During his incarceration, he was denied parole four times due to concerns regarding a lack of remorse, but after serving sixteen years, he was eventually granted release in 2008. His release was supported by family and community members, including a pastor, who advocated for his rehabilitation.
The narrative of this case took a dark turn years after Gregory Green's reintegration into society. In 2016, eight years after his parole, he was arrested again for a horrific familial massacre in Dearborn Heights that mirrored the violence of 1991. In this subsequent incident, he tortured his second wife and murdered their two young daughters as well as his two teenage stepchildren. He pleaded guilty to four counts of second-degree murder, torture, and felony firearm charges in 2017. This time, the court sentenced him to a minimum of 47 years in prison, ensuring he would remain incarcerated for the remainder of his life.
