On October 3, 1976, Harold Phillips, a 30-year-old African American man, was found brutally murdered in his apartment at 27 East 124th Street in New York City. He had been beaten to death with a hammer, a method consistent with a series of other homicides targeting young gay men in the city during that period. Phillips' murder was the third in a string of killings that spanned from 1973 to 1976, all later attributed to Waldo Grant, a serial killer who confessed to four murders in total.
