On a grim autumn day in 1986, the life of Jesus Perez, a 38-year-old Hispanic male, was violently cut short. On October 30th, in a Bronx apartment, Perez and three other men became the victims of a brutal execution-style shooting. The tragic event unfolded when four individuals, intent on robbery, burst into the six-story building. Their targets were believed to be involved in the drug trade, and the assailants were after a score of narcotics and cash.
The perpetrators were later identified as 20-year-old Larry Davis and 17-year-old Ricardo Burgos, accompanied by two other unidentified accomplices. When Perez and the other men in the apartment, Angel Castro, Hector Hernandez, and Juan Rodriguez, did not comply with the robbers' demands, they were all fatally shot. The merciless decision to leave no witnesses sealed their fates in a hail of gunfire.
In the aftermath, a determined manhunt for the killers was launched by law enforcement. The first breakthrough came in early December of that year when Ricardo Burgos was captured in the Bronx. His accomplice, Larry Davis, gained further notoriety on November 19, 1986, when he engaged in a fierce shootout with police who were attempting to arrest him at his sister's apartment, wounding six officers in the process. Davis managed to slip away, sparking a nationwide search that lasted for 17 days. He finally surrendered to authorities on December 6, 1986. Both Davis and Burgos were subsequently indicted on a litany of charges, including four counts of intentional murder and felony murder in the course of a robbery, facing the prospect of spending a minimum of a century behind bars.
