Rick Louis Johnston, a 17-year-old white male, tragically lost his life on August 6, 1976, in Norwood Park Township, Cook County, Illinois. Rick was one of the victims of John Wayne Gacy, a notorious serial killer and sex offender who was responsible for the deaths of at least 33 young men and boys between 1972 and 1978. Gacy, infamously known as 'The Killer Clown' due to his public performances as a clown, lured his victims to his home under various pretenses, where he would then rape,
torture, and murder them. Rick Johnston was identified as 'Body #23' among Gacy's victims. His remains were discovered buried in the crawl space of Gacy's home and were confirmed through dental records on January 1, 1979.
On the night of his disappearance, Rick, a high school student and resident of Bensenville, Illinois, was dropped off by his mother at the Aragon Ballroom to attend a concert. This was the last time he was seen alive. Gacy's heinous crimes came to light in December 1978, leading to his arrest and subsequent conviction for 33 murders, the highest number of homicides committed by a single individual in U.S. legal history at the time. Gacy was sentenced to death and was executed by lethal injection on May 10, 1994, at the Statesville Correctional Center in Illinois.
