In the autumn of 1962, Sammy Smith, a 33-year-old African American man, had returned to his home in Scarbro, West Virginia, after a season of migrant farm work. He picked up a job as a dishwasher at the Four Minute Lunch in the nearby town of Oak Hill, settling back into the rhythm of life in Fayette County.
