In the spring of 1990, the life of Anthony Keith Thurman, a 24-year-old African American man, was tragically cut short in Portland, Oregon. On April 5th, his existence was brutally ended when he was beaten to death with a pipe. The grim discovery of his body was made later that month, found discarded under the cold concrete of a freeway overpass. His death was not an isolated act of violence, but rather one piece of a dark and violent puzzle that spanned multiple states and several years.
The investigation into Thurman's murder would eventually unearth a string of similar crimes, leading authorities to a jobless drifter named Andrew David Edwards. Edwards, a serial killer, preyed on fellow transients in what were described as alcohol-fueled rages. For years, he moved between states, leaving a trail of violence and death in his wake. His violent spree, which is believed to have started as early as 1987, included the murders of multiple individuals he encountered during his transient lifestyle.
The resolution to Anthony Thurman's case, and the end of Edwards' deadly rampage, finally came in January of 1993. Following an attempt to murder another individual in San Jose, California, Edwards was apprehended by law enforcement. Once in custody, he confessed to the series of murders he had committed, including the brutal killing of Anthony Keith Thurman nearly three years prior. For his heinous crimes, Andrew David Edwards was sentenced to life in prison, ensuring he would never again pose a threat to the vulnerable.
