On the evening of May 27, 2002, 25-year-old Tomorra 'Precious' Taylor, an African American woman, spent her final hours visiting with friends and family in Gary, Indiana. Alongside her cousin, she made several phone calls throughout the day to a man named Ronnie Drane, with whom she had made plans to meet later that night. At approximately 9:47 p.m., after leaving her foster mother's home, Taylor was seen getting into a silver van with distinctive rims, driven by Drane.
The following morning, a man collecting cans in M.C. Bennett Park made a grim discovery. Taylor's body was found in a park shelter, her clothes in disarray, suggesting a violent struggle had taken place. An autopsy later confirmed the brutal nature of her death, revealing a fractured neck bone along with multiple bruises and abrasions. The investigation into her death quickly pointed toward Ronnie Drane as the primary suspect.
Evidence gathered by investigators, including phone records and witness testimonies, strongly implicated Drane in the crime. He was subsequently arrested and faced charges for the rape and murder of Tomorra Taylor. During his trial, the prosecution presented a compelling case, which included Drane's own admission of having sexual intercourse with Taylor on the night she was killed, though he claimed it was consensual and that she left his home afterward.
