On a summer night in July of 2018, a birthday celebration ended in a tragic loss of three lives. Heather Talley, a 27-year-old female, her fiancé Darius Ross, 28, and their friend Nicholas Edwards, 28, were fatally shot in Gary, Indiana, on July 15th after a night out with friends and family. The following day, the grim discoveries began. Talley's body was found alongside a roadside. Later that same day, the bodies of Ross and Edwards were discovered in the trunk of Ross's abandoned car. The trio had been celebrating Ross's birthday before their lives were cut short.

For years, the case remained unsolved, leaving a void in the lives of their loved ones. Then, in February 2022, a break in the case brought a glimmer of hope for justice. Two Gary men, 43-year-old Erik P. Long and 32-year-old Huston J. Bond, were arrested and charged with three counts of murder in connection with the slayings. According to court records, an informant facing federal firearms charges told authorities in May 2021 that Bond had confessed to his role in the triple homicide. The informant stated that Bond and Long opened fire when Edwards, Ross, Talley, and a fourth person entered a home in Gary. Ross and Edwards were killed inside the residence, while Talley was shot as she fled with the fourth individual.

The path to trial, however, took another unexpected turn. In March 2022, Huston J. Bond was found unresponsive in his cell at the Lake County Jail and was later pronounced dead. His death was reportedly under investigation, with his defense attorneys stating he was a heart transplant patient who required extensive daily medication. The case against Erik P. Long continues to move through the legal system, leaving the final chapter of this tragic story to be written.
