Laura Showalter, a 58-year-old female, was living in Anchorage in the summer of 1949 when her path crossed with a young U.S. Army soldier stationed at nearby Fort Richardson, Harvey Louis Carignan. On the evening of July 31, 1949, witnesses later described seeing a man and a woman on the grass in a small park; by the next morning, Laura Showalter was dead, the assault that preceded it leaving the unmistakable imprint of an attempted rape.
