Victor Rossi, a 41-year-old male of Italian descent, was found beaten to death in his St. Amant, Louisiana, home on October 27, 1996. The investigation into his death would unravel a chilling series of violent crimes that had plagued the River Parishes area of Louisiana. Rossi, who owned a car-repair shop, had employed a mechanic named Daniel Joseph Blank. It was this employee who would later be identified as his killer.
The motive behind the brutal slaying was determined to be robbery.
Blank, struggling with a gambling addiction, had gone to Rossi's home with the intent to steal money. During the commission of the robbery, a violent confrontation ensued, leading to Rossi being severely beaten and ultimately losing his life. This tragic event marked the beginning of a string of murders committed by Blank.
For over a year, the murder of Victor Rossi remained unsolved, and a sense of fear grew in the surrounding communities as more violent crimes occurred. A dedicated task force, through persistent and traditional police work, eventually connected the dots between the various homicides. Their investigation led them to Daniel J. Blank, who had since moved to Onalaska, Texas, ironically, to what he told neighbors was an effort to escape crime.
Blank was arrested in Texas on November 14, 1997. Following his arrest, he confessed to the murder of Victor Rossi, as well as the murders of five other people and the attempted murders of two more. He admitted that his gambling habit was the driving force behind his violent crime spree. Blank was subsequently charged with six counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder. In the ensuing legal proceedings, he was convicted of these heinous crimes. He received multiple life sentences and was also sentenced to death, though one of his death sentences was later commuted to life imprisonment. Daniel J. Blank remains incarcerated on death row in Louisiana.
