In the quiet village of Tangipahoa, Louisiana, the life of 18-year-old Calvin Felton, a Black male, was cut short on the afternoon of Sunday, May 28, 2023. Shortly after 1:00 PM, deputies from the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office discovered Felton in the yard of a residence on Martin Luther King Drive. He had sustained a single gunshot wound to his stomach. Emergency services transported him to a local hospital, but his injury proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced deceased.
Investigators believe Felton was involved in a verbal altercation before the shooting and may have been shot at a different location nearby, collapsing in the yard where he was found. His mother mentioned he had been struggling with his mental health prior to the incident.
The investigation into the homicide quickly led authorities to a suspect: 26-year-old Tommie Diamond of Kentwood. Diamond was already out on bond for a 2020 second-degree murder charge and was wearing a court-mandated ankle monitor. This monitor allowed investigators to track him to a family member's home in Kentwood on the night of June 1, 2023. As deputies moved in to arrest him for the murder of Calvin Felton, Diamond armed himself with a handgun and barricaded himself inside the residence, allowing others in the house to leave.
A tense standoff ensued for several hours, with the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office Special Response Team attempting to negotiate with Diamond. During the negotiations, Diamond made threats of "suicide by cop" and expressed that he would not go to jail. After several hours of unsuccessful communication, negotiators heard what they believed to be a gunshot from inside the home. A drone was deployed to assess the situation and confirmed that Diamond was deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Tommie Diamond was being sought on charges of second-degree murder, obstruction of justice, and contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile in connection with Calvin Felton's death. Investigators learned that the motive for the shooting may have been a disagreement over money, possibly related to gambling over video games. With Diamond's death, the pursuit of criminal charges in the murder of Calvin Felton came to a somber end.
