A simmering argument between two visitors at a mobile home in Tangipahoa Parish tragically escalated into a fatal shooting, leaving two men dead, including 25-year-old Genesis Kelly. The violent encounter also resulted in a 16-year-old resident of the home being hospitalized with gunshot wounds.
The incident unfolded just before 6 p.m. on March 19, 2025, outside a residence near Spruce Lane and Center Street.
Kelly and 18-year-old Jayvelyn Smith, who were both visiting the home, became engaged in a heated dispute. As the argument intensified, Smith reached for a firearm in his waistband and, in doing so, accidentally shot himself in the leg.
The altercation then spilled out into the yard, where the chaotic scene turned deadly. Smith fired at Kelly, inflicting a fatal wound. When officers from the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office arrived at the scene, they found Kelly deceased. During the turmoil, the 16-year-old resident of the mobile home was also shot.
Both Smith and the teenager were transported to a local hospital for treatment. Smith later succumbed to the self-inflicted gunshot wound he sustained during the initial moments of the conflict. The 16-year-old was reported to be in stable condition. With the suspected shooter also deceased, authorities have concluded their investigation into the incident that tragically cut short the life of Genesis Kelly.
