In the winter of 1949, Delphine Downing, a 28-year-old widow from a suburb of Grand Rapids, Michigan, sought companionship by placing a personal ad. A seemingly well-mannered and successful businessman from New York named Charles Martin responded, expressing a fondness for children, which appealed to Delphine, who had a young daughter named Rainelle. In January of that year, she welcomed 'Charles' and his supposed sister, Martha, into her home. However, the man's real name was Raymond Fernandez, and the woman was his lover, Martha Beck. The pair were not siblings but partners in a grim enterprise of seducing, robbing, and murdering women who sought love through lonely hearts columns.
The situation in the Downing home grew tense. After some time, Delphine became agitated and suspicious of her guests. To calm her, Fernandez gave her sleeping pills. As Delphine drifted into unconsciousness, her daughter, Rainelle, began to cry. Enraged by the child's crying, Beck strangled the little girl, though not fatally at that moment. Fearing that Delphine would discover her daughter's bruises and contact the police, Fernandez shot the sleeping widow in the head. The couple then buried Delphine's body in the basement of her own home, covering the makeshift grave with cement.
For several days, Fernandez and Beck remained in the house, living off Delphine's money. However, Rainelle's persistent crying continued to grate on Beck. Two days after her mother's murder, Beck drowned the toddler in a basin of water. They buried the child next to her mother in the basement. Their horrific crimes were soon discovered after suspicious neighbors reported the disappearance of Delphine and her daughter to the police. On March 1, 1949, officers arrived at the Downing residence and arrested Fernandez and Beck.
Following their arrest, Raymond Fernandez quickly confessed to the murders. He and Martha Beck became notoriously known as the 'Lonely Hearts Killers.' Although they were suspected of numerous other murders, they were ultimately tried and convicted for a murder committed in New York. Both were sentenced to death and were executed by electric chair at Sing Sing prison on March 8, 1951.
