In the winter of 1949, Delphine Downing, a 28-year-old widow from a suburb of Grand Rapids, Michigan, sought companionship by placing a personal ad. A seemingly well-mannered and successful businessman from New York named Charles Martin responded, expressing a fondness for children, which appealed to Delphine, who had a young daughter named Rainelle.
