On a spring evening in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the life of 39-year-old Savannah Rubio was tragically cut short in a senseless act of violence. On May 5, 2026, Rubio was at the playground of Southwest Elementary School where a group of children, including 15-year-old Jeremiah Cuevas-Griffin, were playing soccer. The dispute began when the younger brother of 18-year-old Rafael Martinez-Lopez was told he could not join the game. After his brother returned home and informed him of the rejection, Martinez-Lopez went to the playground and confronted the group.
The verbal altercation quickly escalated when Martinez-Lopez, after demanding a fight, pulled out a handgun. He first shot and killed Jeremiah Cuevas-Griffin. Savannah Rubio, a mother of eight who was known for her protective and caring nature towards all children, rushed to the aid of the young boy. In this heroic act, she too was fatally shot by Martinez-Lopez. Witnesses at the scene, including several children, were left horrified by the sudden eruption of violence. Following the shooting, Martinez-Lopez fled the scene.
The Grand Rapids Police Department quickly launched an investigation. A neighborhood witness helped identify Martinez-Lopez, and he was arrested at a nearby home shortly after the shooting. During a search of the residence, police found a. 40 caliber Glock with an extended magazine and clothing that matched what the suspect was seen wearing on surveillance footage from the school. Martinez-Lopez was charged with two counts of open murder and five weapons-related felonies, including carrying a firearm with unlawful intent and in a weapon-free school zone. He was arraigned in 61st District Court where he was denied bond due to the violent nature of the crimes and the potential flight risk. A probable cause conference was scheduled for May 19, 2026. The case against Rafael Martinez-Lopez is currently proceeding through the legal system.
