On January 27, 2026, a distressing 911 call led Grand Rapids police to a home where they discovered a grim scene. Inside, they found 40-year-old Jacqueline Neill, a White female, deceased from gunshot wounds. Also found slain were her two teenage sons, 15-year-old Cameron Kilpatrick and 13-year-old Michael Kilpatrick. The initial call to the authorities was made by Charles Broomfield, Neill's 44-year-old estranged fiancé, who claimed that intruders had broken into the residence and were
responsible for the triple homicide.
Upon their arrival, law enforcement officers encountered Broomfield in the living room with Neill's body nearby. His five-year-old son was found unharmed upstairs and was safely escorted out of the house. As investigators began to process the scene, inconsistencies in Broomfield's account of a home invasion started to emerge. An examination of the freshly fallen snow outside the home revealed only a single set of footprints leading from the house to a gun box in the backyard and then back to the house. There was no evidence of other individuals entering or leaving the property as Broomfield had claimed.
Further investigation uncovered that shell casings found in the living room, where Jacqueline Neill was killed, and upstairs, where her sons were found, were all fired from the same weapon. Presented with the mounting evidence that contradicted his initial story, Charles Broomfield's account of the events unraveled. During a thorough interview with detectives, he ultimately confessed to the killings.
Following his confession, Charles Broomfield was arrested and is now facing three counts of first-degree premeditated murder for the deaths of Jacqueline Neill and her two sons. He has also been charged with three counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony. The community and the victims' family have been left devastated by what they have described as a senseless act of violence that claimed the lives of a mother and her two children.
