In the spring of 1994, a 28-year-old man named Steven Spurlin Hale vanished from Indianapolis, Indiana. He was last seen on April 1st of that year at the Indianapolis Central Library, a place known to be a meeting spot for gay men. At the time of his disappearance, Steven was working as a custodian at a local restaurant and living in the city. His family would not know his fate for more than two years, a period filled with uncertainty and the anguish of not knowing what had become of him.
The grim answer to Steven's whereabouts began to unfold in June 1996 with a shocking discovery at Fox Hollow Farm, the Westfield estate of a local businessman named Herb Baumeister. Investigators unearthed the remains of at least eleven men on the sprawling property. Among the thousands of charred and crushed bone fragments, forensic analysis would eventually identify some as belonging to Steven Spurlin Hale on September 12, 1996. His death was officially ruled a homicide.
The investigation into the gruesome findings at Fox Hollow Farm pointed to Herb Baumeister as the prime suspect in a string of disappearances and murders of young gay and bisexual men in the Indianapolis area. However, before he could be brought to justice and answer for the lives lost, Baumeister fled to Ontario, Canada.
