Deputy City Marshal Ed Smith of the Port Arthur Police Department in Texas tragically died on September 23, 1902, from a gunshot wound he sustained while responding to a disturbance call. Smith, along with an unnamed deputy, was attempting to take two men into custody near the Sabine Hotel when one of the men pulled out a pistol and shot him in the left side of the chest.
Despite returning fire and killing one of the assailants, Smith succumbed to his injuries the following day at around 10:10 AM.
