Deputy City Marshal Ed Smith of the Port Arthur Police Department in Texas tragically died on September 23, 1902, from a gunshot wound he sustained while responding to a disturbance call. Smith, along with an unnamed deputy, was attempting to take two men into custody near the Sabine Hotel when one of the men pulled out a pistol and shot him in the left side of the chest.
