Joel Lopez Martinez, a 42-year-old man from Port Arthur, Texas, tragically lost his life on July 19, 2019. The incident occurred around 1:15 a.m. when two men, Jaylen Lott and Rakeem Roache, approached Martinez at his home on 18th Street and demanded money. A struggle ensued, during which both suspects fired shots at Martinez. He was taken to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into Martinez's death was extensive and involved multiple pieces of evidence,
including surveillance video and witness testimonies. In December 2019, a witness came forward and identified Lott and Roache as the perpetrators. Both men were arrested and later indicted for murder in 2020. Lott was found to have shot himself while fleeing the scene, and a pistol with a spent shell casing was discovered at the crime scene.
In June 2023, both Lott and Roache pleaded guilty to the murder of Joel Lopez Martinez during an armed robbery. They were each sentenced to 20 years in prison by Judge John Stevens in the Criminal District Court. As part of their sentences, neither man will be allowed to own a firearm after their release.
The case highlights the tragic consequences of armed robbery and the importance of community cooperation in solving such crimes. The sentences handed down to Lott and Roache serve as a reminder of the justice system's role in holding perpetrators accountable for their actions.
