Michael Blanchard, a 42-year-old male from Port Arthur, Texas, was tragically shot and killed on September 29, 2015. The incident occurred during an argument over a drug deal. Blanchard was sitting in the backseat of a vehicle when Logan Wayne Carter, a 20-year-old passenger in the front seat, produced a handgun and fired multiple shots at him. Blanchard was unarmed at the time.
His body was later found behind a business on Gulfway Drive in Port Arthur.
Logan Carter was arrested the following day and confessed to the shooting. He led detectives to the location where he had disposed of the handgun used in the crime. Carter was charged with murder and aggravated assault, receiving a 40-year prison sentence for the murder and an additional 20-year sentence for the aggravated assault, to be served concurrently. The case was investigated by the Port Arthur Police Department and prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Mike Laird.
The senseless killing over a small amount of drugs left Blanchard's family and friends devastated. Prosecutor Mike Laird remarked on the tragedy, noting that Blanchard had children and that many lives were ruined because of the incident.
