Deputy Sheriff John Porter, aged 31, was shot and killed on September 2, 1906, in Redwood, Texas. He was attempting to break up a fight between two brothers at a dance hall when he was attacked and shot in the abdomen. Despite being mortally wounded, Porter managed to return fire, killing one of the brothers and critically wounding the other. He was taken to his home, where he died the following day.
