Sergeant James Delbert Mitchell Jr., aged 43, was a dedicated officer with the Amarillo Police Department in Texas. On November 11, 1985, while returning home from work, he witnessed a one-car accident on Interstate 27. Still in uniform, Mitchell stopped to render aid. The driver of the vehicle, Randall Wayne Hafdahl, fled the scene, and Mitchell pursued him. When Hafdahl was cornered by a locked gate, he turned and shot Mitchell four times with a 9 mm handgun.
Mitchell, unfortunately, did not have the opportunity to return fire.
The shooter, Randall Wayne Hafdahl, was later arrested and charged with the murder of Sergeant Mitchell. During the trial, forensic evidence and testimony played a crucial role in securing the conviction. Hafdahl was sentenced to death and was executed on January 31, 2002. Two other individuals, Shawn David Terry and Daniel Louis Helgan, who were with Hafdahl at the time of the incident, were also arrested and faced charges related to the crime.
Sergeant Mitchell had served with the Amarillo Police Department for 16 years and was well-respected by his colleagues and the community. He was survived by his wife and two daughters, who have since honored his memory. The Amarillo Police Department continues to remember and pay tribute to Mitchell for his bravery and dedication to public service.
