Deputy Sheriff Eugene James Heimann, aged 36, tragically lost his life on March 21, 1988, while serving with the Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office in Richmond, Texas. Heimann was shot and killed while attempting to arrest a burglary suspect. During the encounter, the suspect pulled a pistol from a potato chip bag and shot Deputy Heimann in the face.
The suspect then stole Heimann's cruiser but was apprehended a short time later.
The suspect was convicted of murder and initially sentenced to death. However, he was later granted a new trial, during which he pled guilty to capital murder and received three life sentences. Deputy Heimann had served with the Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office for 18 years and was survived by his wife and two daughters.
The incident highlights the dangers law enforcement officers face daily and the ultimate sacrifice some make to protect their communities. Deputy Heimann's legacy continues to be honored by those who knew him and served alongside him.
