Emmanuel Kofi Osei, a 58-year-old man of African descent, tragically lost his life on February 4, 2021, in Richmond, Texas. He was fatally shot by his 20-year-old son, Micha Osei, inside their home in the 7800 block of Ravens Point Drive. Emmanuel was found with gunshot wounds to his face, back, and leg, and despite being airlifted to the hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.
Micha Osei was arrested without incident shortly after the shooting.
He was spotted by a truck driver near a McDonald's off the Grand Parkway and taken into custody by the Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office. The rifle used in the shooting was later recovered in a neighbor's yard. Micha was charged with murder and booked into the Fort Bend County Jail.
The Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office revealed that their Crisis Intervention Team had responded to several family violence calls at the Osei residence over the past five to six years. According to Micha's brother, who was present during the incident, Micha may have been suffering from a mental illness and was possibly off his medication at the time of the shooting. Sheriff Eric Fagan emphasized the importance of seeking help for mental health issues and encouraged individuals to reach out if they or someone they know is struggling.
The tragic incident has raised questions about the adequacy of mental health support and intervention in cases of family violence. The district attorney's office is involved in reviewing the case, and authorities are investigating any medications Micha may have been taking. The community has been urged to utilize available resources and support systems to prevent such devastating outcomes in the future.
Emmanuel Kofi Osei's death has left a profound impact on his family and the community, highlighting the critical need for mental health awareness and intervention in preventing family violence.
