Sergeant Bruno David Soboleski, aged 33, was a dedicated officer of the Houston Police Department. On April 7, 1991, during a narcotics investigation, he was shot twice in the chest and once in the abdomen by Shelton D. Jones, one of the suspects. Despite immediate medical attention and multiple surgeries, Sergeant Soboleski succumbed to his injuries on April 12, 1991.
The incident occurred when Sergeant Soboleski, along with a grand juror, Linda Ligon, observed Shelton Jones and another
man, Gregory Pickrom, at a known drug-dealing location. As Soboleski questioned the suspects, Jones pulled out a 9mm pistol and fired multiple shots at close range, fatally wounding him. A third suspect, Christopher Dwight Coleman, also fired at Soboleski, although it was unclear if his shots hit the officer.
Shelton Jones was swiftly convicted of the murder and sentenced to death. The jury took only two and a half hours to reach their decision, with State District Judge Woody Densen condemning Jones for his 'cold-blooded' act. A second suspect, Gregory Pickrom, was also involved in the incident but was not sentenced to death. Pickrom was denied parole by the Texas Parole Board in 2000 and again in 2006.
Sergeant Soboleski was remembered as a loving husband and proud father, who had served with the Houston Police Department for seven years. His death was a tragic loss, and he was laid to rest on April 16, 1991, at Oak Hill Cemetery in Houston, Texas.
The case remains a poignant reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers in the line of duty and the impact such losses have on their families and communities.
