Richard Lee Tomlinson, a 34-year-old male, tragically lost his life on April 3, 1995, in Corpus Christi, Texas. On that fateful day, James Daniel Simpson, a 28-year-old former employee of the company, entered the premises armed with a 9mm semiautomatic pistol and a .32-caliber revolver.

The investigation concluded that Simpson had legally purchased the firearms used in the shooting, and there was no prior criminal record or history of mental illness that would have prevented him from acquiring the weapons. In the aftermath of the shooting, legal proceedings ensued regarding the distribution of Richard Lee Tomlinson's death benefits. A dispute arose between Tomlinson's ex-wife, Toni Annette Tomlinson, and his brother, Lynn Tomlinson, over the beneficiary designation of the Walter Rossler Company Profit Sharing Plan and Trust. The court ultimately ruled in favor of Toni Annette Tomlinson, granting her the death benefits on behalf of their minor children, Richard Lee Tomlinson II and Rileigh William Tomlinson.
