Gary Joe Bryant, a 49-year-old male of Caucasian ethnicity, was a dedicated officer with the Giddings Police Department in Texas. On October 27, 1996, while investigating a hit-and-run accident, Patrolman Bryant located the suspect and attempted to arrest him. During the confrontation, the suspect shot Patrolman Bryant six times, including once in the head with Bryant's own .45 caliber handgun, which had been stolen by the suspect.
