Shelia Marie Davis, a 35-year-old woman from Old-town, TX, tragically lost her life on June 4, 2004. Shelia, who was of African American descent, was found dead outside her home after being shot by her ex-boyfriend, Raymond Lee Young. The incident occurred just before midnight when Young, a former Orange police officer, forced his way into Shelia's house with a gun. Shelia attempted to escape but succumbed to her injuries at her neighbor's back door.
Shelia had made multiple reports to the Beaumont police about threats and violence from Young, including a report on the day of her death. Despite these warnings, the tragic event unfolded, leading to a significant investigation and legal proceedings. Young was found guilty of Shelia's murder in 2008 and was sentenced to life in prison. His conviction was based on substantial evidence, including testimonies and the gun used in the crime.
In the years following the conviction, Young filed a petition for review with the Court of Criminal Appeals, alleging that prosecutors presented false evidence at his trial and that his lawyer was ineffective. The court ordered Jefferson County's 252nd court to respond to Young's claims, and the findings were sent to the appeals court for a ruling. Young has been serving his life sentence at the state's McConnell unit in South Texas and will not be eligible for parole until 2034.
