John Edward Hawkins, better known as Big Hawk, was a 36-year-old African American rapper from Houston, Texas. He was a prominent figure in the Houston hip-hop scene and a founding member of DJ Screw's rap group, the Screwed Up Click. On May 1, 2006, Big Hawk was shot and killed near a friend's home in south Houston. His death was a significant loss to the local music community, as he was known for his positive influence and mentorship to many aspiring artists.
