McCombs and Sean H. Brown, at a local coffee shop on the night of her murder. The trio then drove to a muddy construction site where McCombs suddenly pulled out a pistol and shot Ashton in the head out of "morbid curiosity". After the shooting, McCombs and Brown buried Ashton's body in a shallow grave and went about their evening as if nothing had happened.
Matthew McCombs and Sean Brown were arrested on July 12, 2006, after attempting to cross the Canadian border. Both were charged with murder and faced legal proceedings. McCombs eventually pleaded guilty to the murder and received a 50-year prison sentence. Brown, on the other hand, awaited a separate hearing.
