Patrick Shane Nunnelley, a 23-year-old White/Caucasian male from Garland, Texas, was drawn into a violent confrontation in the early hours of July 24, 2010, at the Windward Passage II Apartments on Bass Pro Drive. What began as a personal dispute turned catastrophic when he was shot in the face during an altercation. Even after suffering that wound, he was still able to call for help himself, a grim and desperate act that captures the chaos of those final moments. He was taken to Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, where he later died from his injuries.

In the days immediately after the shooting, police publicly identified Royce Alan Dotson, 27, of Dallas, as the man they believed was responsible. Authorities said the confrontation was tied to an argument over a girlfriend, and they described Dotson as armed and dangerous while asking the public for help locating him. Reports from that time said he fled the apartment complex in a red 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier, and police later reported that the vehicle had been recovered, even as the manhunt for him continued.

The case carries the feel of a life interrupted in an instant: a young man with family and friends left behind, and a killing that seems to have erupted out of emotion and personal conflict rather than chance. Publicly available reporting consistently names Dotson as the suspect in Patrick Nunnelley’s death, but the reliable online sources we found do not clearly document the later outcome of the case in detail. We did not find strong public-source confirmation of a trial, conviction, or final court disposition in the materials available online, so the clearest documented public record is that police identified Dotson as the suspect and were seeking him in the aftermath of the fatal shooting.
