Michelle Ta, a 28-year-old woman of Vietnamese ethnicity from Grand Prairie, Texas, tragically lost her life on July 23, 2011. She was a financial worker at the University of Texas at Arlington and was working towards obtaining her Real Estate license. Michelle was one of several victims in a horrific shooting incident that took place at her sister Trini Do's son's birthday party at a roller rink in Grand Prairie.
The perpetrator, Tan Do, was Trini Do's estranged husband.
Tan Do, 35, had a history of violent behavior and had been involved in a tumultuous relationship with Trini Do. Trini had previously filed for divorce and a protective order against Tan Do due to his violent actions, but she later withdrew both requests. On the day of the incident, Tan Do opened fire at the birthday party, killing Trini Do, Michelle Ta, Trini's sister Lynn Ta , brother Hien Ta , and sister-in-law Thuy Nguyen before turning the gun on himself.
The incident shocked the community and raised concerns about domestic violence and the effectiveness of protective measures for victims. The Grand Prairie Police Department conducted an investigation into the shooting, but since Tan Do died by suicide, no further legal actions or arrests were made in connection with the case.
