Joshua Shane Mitchell, a 26-year-old male of Caucasian ethnicity, was a Deputy Sheriff with the Reagan County Sheriff's Office in Big Lake, Texas. On August 1, 2012, he was fatally shot while responding to a call about a suicidal suspect. Mitchell and other officers encountered the suspect in the 1100 block of Main Street, where the suspect opened fire, fatally wounding Mitchell.
Despite being rushed to a hospital in San Angelo, Mitchell succumbed to his injuries.
The suspect, identified as Marcus Wade Madison, 42, barricaded himself in his home, leading to a 17-hour standoff with law enforcement. During the standoff, Madison shot himself in the face, resulting in his death one week later. Madison was arrested on a warrant for attempted capital murder and was charged in connection with Mitchell's death. The Texas Rangers led the investigation into the incident, and several firearms were found in Madison's residence.
Mitchell, who had served with the Reagan County Sheriff's Office for six years, was well-regarded in his community. He was known for his dedication to serving and protecting the citizens of Big Lake and had a passion for working with children as a D.A.R.E. officer. Mitchell is survived by his wife, Jill Matthews Mitchell, his parents, siblings, and grandparents.
