Stanly Babu Kumbanattel, a 31-year-old Indian-American man, was tragically shot multiple times by two men at a southwest Houston apartment complex on March 6, 2014. He succumbed to his injuries shortly after the incident. Kumbanattel was born and raised in Houston, Texas, and was known for his dedication to his family and friends. He was employed at the Memorial Hermann laboratory and was pursuing engineering studies at the University of Texas at Dallas.
The suspects in Kumbanattel's
death, Donald Henry Nealey and Marquis Davis, both 19 years old at the time, were charged with capital murder and aggravated robbery. The incident occurred just before 8:30 p.m. at the Little Nell Apartments, and less than two hours later, the suspects carried out an armed robbery at the House of Pies restaurant on Westheimer, where they collected cash and cellphones from diners and workers. No injuries were reported during the robbery.
Davis and Nealey were arrested and charged with capital murder in connection with Kumbanattel's death, as well as aggravated robbery related to the House of Pies incident. Davis, known by the nickname "Dootie," had a record of arrests dating back to his juvenile years, including misdemeanor theft and marijuana possession. Nealey was also implicated in a separate shooting incident in Fort Bend County.
The tragic death of Stanly Babu Kumbanattel shook the community, and his family remembered him as a selfless individual who always fought for the ones he cared about. His funeral was held at Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery in Houston, attended by family, friends, and community members.
