Oscar Anibal Gomez, a 58-year-old Hispanic man, tragically lost his life on October 12, 2019, in Houston, Texas. Gomez was killed while defending his wife from purse snatchers in the parking lot of their apartment complex. The incident occurred around 12:30 a.m. when three men approached the couple and demanded the purse of Gomez's wife. In an attempt to protect her, Gomez was attacked by one of the suspects and shot.
Despite his wife's efforts to administer CPR, Gomez succumbed to his injuries.
The suspects were described as three African-American men who fled the scene in an unknown black sedan. Houston police released surveillance video and a composite sketch of one of the suspects in an effort to gather information and identify those responsible. Gomez's wife, Claudia Pineda, expressed her grief and called for justice, stating that her husband died in her arms.
The investigation into Gomez's death revealed that this was not an isolated incident, as another woman in the area had been robbed and assaulted in a similar manner earlier that night. The lack of adequate lighting and security measures at the apartment complex was also brought into question, with some suggesting that negligent security may have contributed to the tragedy.
