Lorraine Diaz, a 21-year-old Hispanic woman from Richmond, Texas, tragically lost her life on January 11, 2017. She was discovered shot to death in the trunk of a burning car in a rural area off FM 766, south of George Ranch High School. Diaz, who was the mother of two young children, was identified after the fire was extinguished. The scene was described as a gruesome murder, and the investigation initially faced significant challenges due to the condition of the crime scene.
For years,
the case remained unsolved until a breakthrough occurred in late 2022. Johnny Minh Dang, Diaz's boyfriend at the time of her death, was arrested on November 29, 2022, and charged with first-degree murder. Dang, who was 33 years old at the time of his arrest, had been considered a prime suspect early in the investigation but was not charged due to insufficient evidence. The Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office, with the assistance of the Texas Rangers, managed to gather enough new information to make the arrest.
Dang is currently being held at the Fort Bend County Jail on a $500,000 bond, and additional charges are expected. The persistence and dedication of the detectives and Texas Rangers were crucial in solving this cold case and bringing Diaz's family closer to justice. Sheriff Eric Fagan expressed gratitude for their tireless efforts and emphasized the importance of never giving up on such cases.
