On December 10, 2019, a tragic incident occurred in Edinburg, Texas, resulting in the deaths of three individuals: 30-year-old Aaron Cortez, 19-year-old Rebecca Cantu, and 48-year-old Magdelena Cantu. The incident was determined to be a murder-suicide, with the shooter identified as 57-year-old Saul Avila.
Aaron Cortez, a nurse and Army Reservist, was providing care for Rebecca's toddler, who required 24-hour medical attention.
Rebecca had reported to police that Saul Avila, her stepfather, had sexually assaulted her since she was 14 years old. Despite her initial reluctance to press charges, Rebecca eventually reported the abuse to the authorities on December 6, 2019.
In response to Rebecca's report, Child Protective Services visited the apartment and informed Rebecca and Magdelena that Avila would not be allowed to return. However, on the morning of December 10, Avila, upon learning about the investigation, fatally shot Rebecca, Magdelena, and Aaron before taking his own life.
The investigation revealed that Avila had a history of possessive and abusive behavior, and the healthcare company that employed Aaron was aware of the dangerous situation but failed to report it to the police. Following the incident, a lawsuit was filed against the healthcare company, resulting in a jury awarding nearly $16.6 million in damages to the victims' families.
This tragic event highlights the importance of reporting and addressing abuse allegations promptly to prevent such devastating outcomes.
