Darren Dewayne Smith, a 55-year-old man from Dallas, Texas, died on April 24, 2020. He was fatally shot by a homeowner, Luis Solis-Cuevas, who claimed Smith was burglarizing a shed behind his home. When confronted, Solis-Cuevas fired shots at Smith, who then fled in his vehicle before crashing. Smith was found shot to death inside the car. Solis-Cuevas was charged with manslaughter for "recklessly" firing his gun.
The incident occurred just before 11 p.m.
when police were called for a welfare check in the 2900 block of Vista Mar St. Investigators followed a blood trail to Solis-Cuevas' home and determined that Smith was shot during the confrontation. Solis-Cuevas admitted to firing the shots that led to Smith's death.
In addition to the manslaughter charge, Smith had a criminal background, including a guilty plea to distributing methamphetamine, for which he was sentenced to 48 months in prison. The court recommended that Smith participate in a residential drug abuse program, mental health counseling, and educational and vocational programs during his incarceration.
