Christopher Jolly, a 17-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on May 4, 2020, in Lubbock, Texas. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning when police responded to a shots-fired call in the 2600 block of East Baylor Street. Upon arrival, officers found Jolly on the ground, bleeding from gunshot wounds. He was immediately transported to University Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation revealed that Jolly was ordered out of a
vehicle at gunpoint by two suspects, Jeremiah Anthony Guerrero, 22, and Derik Edmond, 22, both of Lubbock. According to witness accounts, Guerrero, also known as "Bruno," and Edmond, also known as "Trill," approached the vehicle where Jolly was seated. Guerrero, armed with a pistol, began hitting the hood of the vehicle and demanded that Jolly exit. As Jolly attempted to flee, shots were fired, and he was struck. Witnesses reported seeing Guerrero and Edmond at the scene, and both were subsequently arrested and charged with murder.
Further investigation linked the shooting to gang-related activities. Latravian Brantley, an 18-year-old male, was also arrested in connection to the case. Brantley was involved in a separate gang-related shooting at the South Plains Mall in February 2021, which was tied to the murder of Christopher Jolly. Brantley and another suspect, James Childress, 19, were identified as participants in the mall shooting, which investigators believe was a retaliatory act related to Jolly's death. Brantley was charged with deadly conduct with a firearm and remains in the Lubbock County Detention Center.

The arrests of Guerrero, Edmond, and Brantley have brought some measure of justice to Jolly's family, but the community continues to grapple with the broader implications of gang-related crime.
