On March 18, 2021, at approximately 3:33 a.m., Austin police responded to a report of a male lying outside 106 Oertli Lane in the Georgian Acres neighborhood. Upon arrival, officers discovered Danny Mendoza, a 28-year-old Hispanic male, suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite immediate medical attention and transportation to a local hospital, Mendoza succumbed to his injuries.
Investigations revealed that Mendoza had been drinking inside the residence with a woman and another man,
identified as 22-year-old Hispanic male Manuel Vilchis. An argument ensued, leading Mendoza and Vilchis to step outside, where the confrontation escalated, resulting in Mendoza being shot. Vilchis fled the scene in a Ford F-150 pickup truck.
On March 31, 2021, the U.S. Marshals Lone Star Fugitive Task Force apprehended Vilchis without incident in the 8000 block of Decker Lane in Austin. He was subsequently transported to the Austin Police Department, where his bond was set at $500,000. Vilchis faces charges related to the fatal shooting of Danny Mendoza.
