According to police reports, the incident occurred around 5:15 p.m. when a suspect approached Medina and shot him in the face. The motive behind the shooting was believed to be robbery.
Medina's daughter and grandchildren, who were nearby, heard the gunshot and found him
lying on the ground. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene before police arrived. The suspect was described as a Black male wearing a blue camouflage hoodie, blue jeans, and a ski mask. He was last seen heading west through the complex in a red or burgundy passenger vehicle, possibly with a second suspect who may have been driving.
Richmond police launched an investigation and sought the public's help in locating the suspects. On June 11, 2021, an arrest was made in connection with Medina's murder. The suspect was taken into custody and the case was ongoing as authorities continued to gather evidence and build their case.
The loss of Carlos Guiracocha Medina was deeply felt by his family and the community, as he was a beloved grandfather to 17 grandchildren, with another grandchild on the way.
