On May 2, 2021, Francisco Villanueva Rodriguez, a 35-year-old man, was found shot to death in an alley behind the Tiger Cabaret on R L Thornton Freeway in Dallas, Texas. Police responded to a welfare check around 9 a.m. and discovered Rodriguez with a gunshot wound to the face. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Dallas Fire-Rescue. His death was investigated as a murder, but no arrests were made at the time, and the motive remained unknown.
The investigation continued, and on June 2,
2021, Julio Guerrero, a 28-year-old suspect, was taken into custody following an hours-long standoff with Dallas SWAT. Guerrero was described by Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia as a "very violent individual" and was wanted for the alleged murder of Rodriguez. Guerrero also faced additional charges, including the shooting of a 3-year-old on May 10, 2021, and four outstanding aggravated assault felony warrants. He surrendered after a standoff that involved SWAT using a battering ram and tear gas before Guerrero finally gave up.
The case against Guerrero included charges of aggravated assault on a public servant due to his actions during the standoff. The investigation into Rodriguez's murder and the subsequent arrest of Guerrero highlighted the violent nature of the crime and the efforts of law enforcement to bring the suspect to justice.
