On a tragic Saturday, Kierra Brianna Lane, a 25-year-old mother of two, was shot and killed in her Covington, Kentucky home. The incident, which occurred on January 6, 2024, unfolded during what was intended to be a simple custody exchange with the father of her children, Mario Payne.
The quiet afternoon was shattered by the sound of four gunshots. According to witnesses, after a brief exchange, Payne went to his car, retrieved a pistol, and opened fire.
Kierra was struck just inside the front door of her residence as she reportedly tried to close the door. She collapsed in the common hallway of her home and passed away at the scene. Her two young children were in another room at the time of the shooting.
In the aftermath, Mario Payne was identified as the suspect. He was later taken into custody in Louisville and is facing a murder charge as well as a charge for illegal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Payne reportedly claimed the shooting was an accident, stating the gun discharged accidentally multiple times while he was handing it to Kierra.
