On May 21, 2021, 23-year-old Cameron James Gray, a man of Navasota, Texas, was fatally shot in the parking lot of an H-E-B store in College Station, Texas. Gray was involved in what appeared to be a botched drug deal when he was shot by 18-year-old Trevon Marcel Stewart of Lexington, Texas. The incident occurred around 8:21 p.m., and despite being transported to a local hospital, Gray was pronounced dead later that evening.
Witnesses at the scene described a confrontation over a firearm,
which led to Gray being shot in the back. Stewart and another individual, Amarion Cooper, had arranged to meet Gray to purchase marijuana for a graduation celebration. During the altercation, Cooper was also shot in the leg. Stewart transported Cooper to a hospital emergency room, where police later found several firearms, 15 ounces of marijuana, and THC wax in the vehicle.
Both Stewart and Cooper were arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, unlawful carrying of a weapon, and drug possession charges. Stewart was held on a $975,000 bond, while Cooper faced an $800,000 bond. In April 2023, Cooper pled guilty to murder and was sentenced to 45 years in prison. Stewart is still awaiting trial and remains out on bond.
