Paul Douglas Hulsey Jr., a 30-year-old male police officer with the Beaumont Police Department, tragically lost his life in the line of duty on March 22, 1988. Officer Hulsey was investigating a vehicle with stolen plates when he spotted it in a hotel parking lot. After running the vehicle's tags, he learned it was stolen and requested backup. Unfortunately, his backup officer was unavailable, so Officer Hulsey approached the suspect alone.
A violent struggle ensued, and the suspect managed to retrieve a gun from the room and fatally shot Officer Hulsey.
The suspect, Michael Lee Lockhart, was later identified as a serial killer wanted in Florida for killing a 14-year-old girl and in Indiana for killing a 16-year-old girl and robbing a bank. Lockhart was apprehended and charged with capital murder for Officer Hulsey's death. The case was moved to San Antonio due to extensive publicity, and Lockhart was convicted of capital murder. He was executed on December 9, 1997.
Officer Hulsey had served with the Beaumont Police Department for eight years and left behind a wife and two daughters. His death was a significant loss to the community and the police department, and he is remembered and honored for his dedication and service.
